GSA Connects 2024 is more than just a meeting—it's an electrifying hub for scientific discovery and professional growth, tailored for geoscientists at all stages of their careers. The event offers a unique opportunity for media representatives to cover cutting-edge technical sessions, engage with top-tier professional education, and connect with both scientists and passionate science journalists and communicators.
With its promise of impromptu collaborations, special lectures, receptions, and exhibits, GSA Connects 2024 is where the latest advances in geoscience will be unveiled and discussed. Thousands of geoscientists are expected to attend, making this event a prime venue for capturing the innovations, insights, and connections that drive the field forward.
Who Can Register
- Working Press: Journalists, photographers, videographers, bloggers, authors, and filmmakers representing bona fide news media organizations with a press card, letter, or business card from the publication.
- Freelance Science Writers: Those presenting a current membership card from NASW, ISWA, regional affiliates of NASW, ISWA, CSWA, ACS, ABSW, EUSJA, and evidence of their reporting on science published in 2022 or 2023. Note: Authorship on technical research does not qualify for press credentials.
- Public Information Officers (PIOs): Institutional communicators from scientific societies, educational institutions, and government agencies.

Registration Details
- Media preregistration is encouraged before 10 September 2024. Onsite registration will be available thereafter.
- All press registrations are issued at the discretion of the GSA Press Office and are non-transferable.
- Working media will receive complimentary registration, which permits access to technical sessions, the Exhibit Hall, and the onsite newsroom.
- Presenters must pay the registration fee to attend Connects 2024. Journalists and PIOs must pay for any additional events they wish to attend.
Media Resource Center
The on-site media resource center and pressroom will be available exclusively for working press to conduct interviews, write stories, and take a break between sessions. Coffee and snacks will be available. Media representatives will receive a special welcome gift upon arrival.
Event Highlights
- 511. Talking Science: A Communicating Science Workshop: This highly interactive workshop provides hands-on, real-time practice in tailoring messages for specific audiences and creating clear, engaging communication.
- Special Lecture: Beyond the Degree: Making an Impact with Geology: Geoinfluencers Cate Larsen and Ethan Penner and USGS Director Dave Applegate will share insights on non-academic careers in geology, offering tips for success and personal stories from industry, consulting, and government geologists.
- Reception and Book Signing with Ray Troll and Kirk Johnson: Sunday, 22 September, 7–8:30 p.m. The incredible artist Ray Troll and paleontologist Kirk Johnson will take attendees on a journey through fossil-rich landscapes. Ray and Kirk will answer questions and sign books. A limited number of free tickets are available for media representatives at this event.
- Exciting Panel Discussion: Join leading journalists from renowned platforms such as The New York Times and NPR as they delve into the intersection of media and geoscience. Details to be announced soon.
