TRAVEL GRANTS

The North-Central Section provides funds for the regional NC Section meeting as well as the GSA Annual Meeting.

The eligibility criteria is slightly different depending on which type of meeting you are attending.

GSA Connects (national)

To be considered for the annual meeting travel grant, the student must:

  1. Be a Student Member of GSA. (join now or renew)
  2. Be enrolled in an academic department within the North-Central Section (see boundaries).
  3. Be registered for the GSA annual meeting (priority will be given to students presenting oral or poster papers).
  4. Complete the online Travel Grant Application Form which is available from the "Students & ECPs" page on the annual meeting website during that meeting's early registration period.

North-Central Section Meeting (regional)

To be considered for the North-Central Section meeting travel grant, the student must:

  1. Be a Student Member of GSA.
  2. Be enrolled in an academic department.
  3. Be registered for the section meeting to which you are applying for funds (priority will be given to students presenting oral or poster papers).
  4. Complete the online Section Travel Grant Application Form (available from the "Students & ECPs" page on the meeting website during the early registration period).

The checks will be mailed to the recipient following the meeting.

Notification of grant status will be made prior to the cancellation deadline, so if your attendance is dependent on receipt of a travel grant and you do not receive it, you may obtain a full registration refund.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH GRANTS

Proposal Deadline: 15 April 2024

The North-Central Section of the Geological Society of America offers competitive undergraduate research grants to students enrolled in institutions of higher education in the North-Central Section and who are student members of the Geological Society of America. Grant maximum is $750 per project.

Students and applications must meet the following criteria:

  • The student must be enrolled at an institution within the North-Central Section [see boundaries]
  • The student must be a student member of GSA.

  • The online application must be completed during the application period ending 15 April. Funding decisions will be announced after 15 April (extended in 2022) with funds being mailed to successful applicants by 30 May.
  • Funded students are expected to expend the funds as stated in the proposal; return any unexpended funds to the Section Secretary; submit a summary report (2-3 pages) upon completion of the project.  The Section strongly encourages that the results of the funded research be reported at a North-Central Section meeting, as well. The North-Central Section routinely provides Travel Grants for student members to attend the section meetings and provides awards for student papers presented.

The proposal should follow this sequence:

  1. Complete the online application.
    (Download sample application/worksheet).
  2. Proposal narrative.
    This must include 1) Descriptive Title, 2) Objective, 3) Significance and Methods Used. Please note format: maximum of 1000 words: minimum 10pt font; maximum of four pages double-spaced including tables and figures allowed. If this limit is exceeded the application will be disqualified. This will be uploaded to the online application using the Project Upload and should be in a PDF or Word document format.
  3. Itemized budget.
    Please include all potential sources of funds, including prior or pending funding. Upload to the online application in the “Budget Upload” area (PDF or Word only).
  4. Your project supervisor will be contacted requesting they complete a recommendation form in the online application system. Please make sure your supervisor is aware that they must do this in order for your proposal to be considered.

The deadline for all proposals is 15 April.
