Authors: Robert H. Dott, Jr. and John W. Attig

Robert H. Dott Jr. and John W. Attig wrote Roadside Geology of Wisconsin to help residents and visitors alike "envision mastodons roaming in front of glaciers 12,000 years ago, feel storm waves pounding sea cliffs 500 million years ago, and hear volcanoes exploding 1,900 million years ago." With lively prose, detailed maps, black-and-white photographs, and shaded-relief images, the authors succeed in their goal: unraveling the 2,800 million years of geologic history recorded in Wisconsin's rocks.

Introductory sections describe the geology of each region, and thirty-five road guides locate and interpret the rocks, sediments, and landforms visible from the state's highways, including the Great River Road in the Mississippi Valley. Roadside Geology of Wisconsin delves further into the geologic history of specific sites such as Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, the Wisconsin Dells, the geologically renowned Baraboo Hills, and more than twenty-five state parks. Features of and access points to the Ice Age National Scenic Trail are noted.

About the Authors: Robert H. Dott, Jr. began college at the University of Oklahoma and then followed both his grandfather and father to the University of Michigan. He graduated from Michigan and later he received a PhD from Columbia University. He taught at the University of Wisconsin from which he retired in 1994. Robert's academic career focused primarily on sedimentology, tectonics, and the evolution of the Earth. He conducted research in Wisconsin's Baraboo Hills, Oregon, Tierra del Fuego, South Georgia Island, and Antarctica. Later in his career he developed a deep interest in the history of geology. He created a course in the subject and published studies of several important geologists.

John W. Attig is an emeritus professor of geology with the University of Wisconsin-Extension. For 32 years, he was a research geologist at the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. His research on glacial processes and the evolution of glacial landscapes has taken him to Antarctica, Scandinavia, and many parts of North America, including Alaska. John has also published extensively on the glacial geology of Wisconsin.
