Description: Join us on a day-long field trip to explore the Proterozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Poudre Canyon and Big Thompson Canyon areas in the northern Colorado Front Range.
We will examine a wide variety of lithologies, including quartzite, schist, amphibolite, and gneiss, as well as subduction-related plutons and enigmatic beryl-bearing felsic pegmatites. Geochemical, geochronologic, and metamorphic petrology datasets will be presented to connect these rocks to various tectonic models and to explore their implications for crustal generation and Proterozoic tectonics in the region. The cost of the trip includes round-trip transportation from the convention center and lunch.
Considerations: There are a range of destination types. Some will be outcrops 10s of meters from the vehicles; some will require hiking along a busy highway of about 100 meters total. At a few stops, to see the best outcrops, hiking over rough ground for 400 meters total is necessary; however, alternative outcrops within 10s of meters of the vehicles can be shown. Probably only the outcrops within 10s of meters of the parked vehicles will be accessible. This will be about 50% of the destinations.
Cost includes ground transportation, lunch, snacks, and water.
