This trip examines the spectacular outcrops exposed in the Trans-Pecos region. The trip focuses on the organic-rich marlstones and limestones of the Boquillas, and includes discussions on OAE2, bottom-water chemistry, fracture patterns and structure, and eustacy, which are compared to the equivalent subsurface Eagle Ford. The trip also examines karsting in the rudist-rich Devil’s River Ls, thickness and stacking patterns of the Del Rio and Buda, and fractures and channels in the Austin Chalk. Hikes are short except for the tour of the Fate Bell Shelter in Seminole Canyon State Park. Cost includes transportation (mini vans), two nights at the Ramada Inn Del Rio (double occupancy), park entrance fees, lunch, snacks, and water.
This field trip starts and ends at the conference hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The outcrops are all along Highway 90, so walks will be relatively short (1/4 mile or less) with minor changes in elevation. The Trans-Pecos region is semi-arid and can be very warm in late October so dress accordingly and bring sun protection, but please wear long pants and hiking boots due to the abundance of cacti and other sharp plants and the possibility (albeit very low) of an encounter with a rattlesnake. We will be providing drinks, food, and snacks, but you are welcome to bring your favorite drink or snack if you wish. Although the field trip is entirely within the US, we will be going through at least one border checkpoint each day of the trip, so bring your papers if you are not a US citizen.
