Endorser: National Science Foundation
Dates: Wed.–Thurs., 21–22 May, 2025
Location: GSA Rocky Mountain Section Meeting 2025, Provo, Utah, USA
Start Time: 8:00 AM (Wed.)
End Time: 5:00 PM (Thurs.)
This field trip will showcase the current understanding of the Marysvale Gravity Slide Complex, consisting of three gigantic gravity slides (each ~100 km long) covering an area >8000 km2. This complex allows for an amazing perspective into repeated catastrophic collapses of a major volcanic field during its magmatic evolution and growth. Field observations of intense deformation, clastic dikes, pseudotachylyte, jigsaw-puzzle fracturing, and consistency of kinematic indicators will illustrate the interpretation of rapid emplacement during each event. In particular, the most up-to-date and integrated field, geochronology, and rock mechanic data will be highlighted to explain our understanding of the internal anatomy, age, and emplacement mechanisms for each mega-slide. Cost includes transportation, hotel (21 May), lunch, dinner, snacks, and water.
