This regional map of the surface sediment facies of the Florida-Bahamas Plateau has been synthesized from numerous reports. Sediments of the deep-water areas which surround and interrupt the shallow plateau are also shown, although data are very limited. The sediments are classified using Dunham's (1962) depositional texture (boundstone, grainstone, packstone, wackestone, and mudstone) as the primary basis for subdivision and grain type (oölite, pelletoid, skeletal, quartz, and calcite) as secondary subdivisions. Generalized sediment isopachs indicate possible areas of relict sediment. Distribution of surface sediments provides a model for interpreting facies shifts in carbonate rocks.
