Gravity anomalies indicate irregularities in the distribution of mass within the earth. Topography is a measure of irregularities in shape of the outer surface of the solid part of the earth. The relationship between gravity anomalies and topography is dependent on the distribution and magnitude of mass anomalies at depth within the earth as well as the mass due to the topography itself. This distribution of mass anomalies, in turn, depends upon the processes that created the features and the physical properties of the crust. Determination of the gravity field over a topographic feature can provide information on the nature of the distribution of mass beneath the topographic feature, and is a powerful way to study the structure of a planetary body. Techniques for quantifying the transfer function between topography and its gravity field have enabled more precise analysis of the structure of the earth. These maps provide a worldwide view of variations in gravity anomalies. Such a vista permits a better grasp of the relationship between gravity anomalies and tectonism, a better appreciation of local variations, an improved basis for comparing satellite data with the surface field, and guidance in the selection of key areas for future study. Mercator projection. Scale at equator: ~1:22,000,000.
