In 1945 The Geological Society of America sent to its Fellows and to many other geologists and organizations a preliminary Geological Map of South America (Levorsen, 1945). The map had been compiled by a committee composed of Messrs. Joseph T. Singewald, Jr., Charles E. Weaver, George W. Stose, and A. I. Levorsen, Chairman. Many individuals, government organizations, geological societies, and private concerns answered the request for corrections and criticism. In the following years an enlarged committee, listed on page v, gathered and edited new or different data from each country. George W. Stose as editor of the Geologic Map of South America assembled the data and, with one or another committee member, evaluated conflicting data from different sources, made decisions as to symbols and format, and submitted a final draft at the end of 1948. The colored geologic map, on a scale of 1:5,000,000, was published in 1950 by The Geological Society of America, in cooperation with the American Geographical Society and the United States Geological Survey…
