In November 1956 a symposium on rock deformation was held in conjunction with the Annual Technical Conference of the Institute of Geophysics, University of California, Los Angeles. This volume contains most of the papers presented at the symposium. In most instances these have been expanded, extended, and revised as a result of new ideas and further experimental work suggested by discussions during and after the symposium. The paper by William F. Brace reports recent work which is germane to the subject matter herein and is included through his courtesy. This collection of papers gives some recent results of most of the active workers in the United States in experimental rock deformation and also presents several new theoretical contributions. Neither the volume as a whole nor any of the individual papers attempts to summarize past work, but all draw on the wide experience of the authors. Each paper reports research which was separately conceived and executed, and so is necessarily specialized and detailed. However, because the fraternity is small, all the authors are intimately acquainted with all the work, so that there is a continuity of subject matter and much of common interest among the various contributions. Throughout there is the common goal of a better understanding of the mechanics of the deformation of rocks in the earth. Implicit is the hope that this book will stimulate interest in an exciting but woefully undermanned field.
