Full Title: Tidal Flat Sedimentation of the Colorado River Delta, Northwestern Gulf of California
Author: Robert W. Thompson
Recognition of tidal flat deposits in the geologic record requires a knowledge of modern intertidal sediments from a variety of physiographic settings. The most detailed studies hitherto available have been centered on the North Sea coast of Germany and the Netherlands. The purpose of this volume is to broaden our knowledge by recording the detailed examination of the products of a very different environment. In the northwestern Gulf of California, intertidal deposits accumulated in an arid climate, at the landward end of a semi-enclosed basin, where tidal range is great but waves relatively insignificant. Contrasts between the two areas emphasize the importance of physiographic setting in controlling the morphology and sedimentary facies of tidal flats.
