Boulder County, Colorado, whose mines have produced more than $33 million in gold and silver since 1858, has long been known as one of the few classical areas of telluride mineralization in North America. Its fame rests chiefly on the remarkable variety of rare metallic minerals that are abundant in the telluride veins; some 35 different metallic species and a total of 67 vein-forming minerals have been identified. The unusual mineralogy of the veins early drew the attention of such capable scientists as Genth and Silliman, and their careful records have required no major modifications since. This work primarily records a modern x-ray and microscope study of several hundred telluride samples from 53 mines and prospects in the county. The abundance, associations, and paragenesis of metallic minerals are interpreted in terms of the environment and of the ore-forming processes.
