Published by The Geological Society of America in cooperation with The Mineralogical Society of America, this book presents theoretical powder patterns of 193 siIicates, calculated from single-crystal structural data. Source data, including cell dimensions, site occupancy, space group, z, cleavage and habit, precede tabulated spacings, integrated and peak intensities associated with each calculated silicate pattern. A simulated diffractometer trace (a graphical resume of these data) accompanies each table. As the patterns are not influenced by sample idiosyncrasies or geometric and instrumental aberrations, they are useful for identification, as standards for quantitative analysis and as a guide to indexing of peaks used for calculations of accurate cell dimensions. The collection is intended as a supplement to the ASTM-X-Ray Powder Data File and includes a table of the five strongest diffraction maxima organized according to the Hanawalt scheme. Because the 5-line index is limited to silicates, it is a compact aid for geologists and mineralogists in identifying silicate phases by powder x-ray techniques.
