This paper presents the results of a project carried out under the auspices of the United States–Japan Cooperative Science Program during the period January 1965 through October 1968. The goal of this project was a comparison of two low-grade metamorphic belts marginal to the Pacific Ocean, namely the Sanbagawa and Franciscan terranes. These are part of a much more extensive, Pacific-encircling series of low-grade metamorphic terranes. Characteristic portions of the Outer Metamorphic Belt of Japan and the California Coast Ranges are contrasted with regard to: (1) local areal relationships, petrology, and regional structures; (2) metamorphic assemblages, phase compositions, and mineral parageneses; (3) nature of element partitioning among coexisting minerals; (4) inferred physiocochemical conditions during metamorphism; and (5) relationship of blueschist facies metamorphism to circumpacific orogenesis. Four color maps at various scales are included. In all, modes were measured for nearly 700 thin sections of rocks from the two metamorphic belts; bulk densities for more than half of the corresponding samples here obtained. Also, selected optical and X-ray properties for some minerals from these rocks have been measured. All these data are tabulated elsewhere but are summarized graphically in this report. Chemical data listed in the paper include conventional gravimetric rock analyses, "wet" chemical analyses of minerals, and electron microprobe analyses of minerals.
