This volume of papers originated as contributions to the Fifth Caribbean Geological Conference, which was held during the first week of July, 1968, in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. The conferences have had a salutary effect on the rate of advance of knowledge of Caribbean geology, especially in the areas of stratigraphy, structural geology, paleontology, geomorphology, economic geology, and igneous petrology. Recently, there has been a focus on marine geology and geophysics, and there is every indication this area of interest will grow at future meetings. The ten papers in this volume are representative of current Caribbean research in the areas of petrology, structural geology, and marine geology and geophysics. Further, they effectively outline areas of special opportunity for future research in the Caribbean—areas that are of special interest today because of the intense current attention toward problems of the world's oceans and their interrelationship with continental border zones.
