Estuaries are submerged features of the coastal zone developed by geological agents, influenced by physical and chemical processes, inhabited by organisms, and used by man. Understanding the dynamic attributes of estuaries leads to more effective management of them. Contributors to this volume mirror the variety of viewpoints that may be applied to sharpen this understanding. A number of participants in the Symposium on Estuaries published their work independently, but the thirty-one contributions to this volume, in many cases updated extensions of the original presentations, adequately reflect the scope and character of the proceedings. Interactions between geologists and other disciplinary and professional specialists proved stimulating and productive, and the Southeastern Section of The Geological Society of America hopes that this volume will extend the flavor of the interdisciplinary exchanges to a broader audience of geologists. In the future, hopefully, effective interdisciplinary communication among the spectrum of specialists involved in estuarine research will be fostered by geologists who contribute their thoughts to symposia sponsored by other professional organizations.
