Full Title: Nazca Plate: Crustal Formation and Andean Convergence - A Volume Dedicated to George P. Woollard
Editors: La Verne D. Kulm, Jack Dymond, E. Julius Dasch, Donald M. Hussong, and Roxanne Roderick
In 1970, G.P. Woollard pointed to the need for a detailed study of an oceanic plate from its locus of origin on an oceanic rise to its subduction beneath a continental margin. The Nazca plate off South America appeared ideal, and an ongoing land program for the study of the Andes promised to be of value. These 35 papers resulted; they are organized into five sections. First, the history of the Nazca Plate Project is described. Subsequent chapters are arranged in the natural order of the evolution and history of the oceanic crust, beginning at the spreading East Pacific Rise (Divergent Boundary); the sedimentation on the evolving crust as it is transported across the Nazca plate (Metalliferous Sediments); the disruption and destruction of the subducting plate along the Peru-Chile Trench and its influence on the evolution of the Andean continental margin (Continental Margin and Trench); and the effect of subduction on the volcanism, mountain building, and ore deposits of the Andes (Andean Convergence Zone).
