Is there a common thread other than their circum-Pacific location that links these terranes? Perhaps, but generalizations depend on several factors. Plutonic terranes wherever situated are enormously complex, and our understanding of them is barely more than incipient. The articles here review the available information concerning plutonic terranes of the countries or regions adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, and contain new information and insights. Material is arranged so that regions described form a clockwise sequence around the Pacific, beginning with New Zealand and ending with Chile. This volume and the companion microfiche, the Annotated Bibliography of Circum-Pacific Plutonism, form an important consolidating work. They resulted from the CircumPacific Plutonism Project of IGCP.
