This volume is about the paleoceanography and paleobiogeography of the world ocean during the Miocene Epoch, a time when major polar ice sheets became a permanent feature of Earth's surface and global paleo-climatic and paleoceanographic changes took place. The sedimentary sequences used in these studies were based on results from the highly successful Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). The topics of these 14 papers include paleogeography and paleodepth of the Miocene ocean; stratigraphy; stable isotopic history of the Pacific and Indian oceans; benthic foraminiferal distributions in relation to bottom and intermediate water structure and history; surface-water biogeography of planktonic foraminifers and radiolaria in relation to paleoceanographic history and paleoceanographic studies of the Atlantic Ocean. Includes many tables and illustrations. A fine example of what can be achieved by micropaleontologists, geochemists, and geophysicists working with a common aim, this book provides more knowledge about the oceans than is available for any other time except the Quaternary.
