Full Title: Mt. Pelee, Martinique: A Study of an Active Island-Arc Volcano
Authors: Alan L. Smith and M. John Roobol
The authors divide Mt. Pelée's stratigraphy into four categories and present a generalized geologic map showing each, together with 30 representative stratigraphic sections. Distribution, characteristics, and grain-size data of the volcaniclastic deposits are described in terms of the different eruptive styles. The mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry of the volcanic rocks and their associated cumulate blocks are discussed, and a petrogenetic model for their origin is proposed. The geochemistry and isotopic compositions of Mt. Pelée are compared with those of the other volcanoes of the Lesser Antilles. The volcanic history and evolution of Mt. Pelée are reflected in a comprehensive model that makes use of all stratigraphic, petrologic, and geochemical data. Finally, volcanic hazards and the possibility of future eruptions are discussed.
