Full Title: Upper Devonian Corals of the Mackenzie River Region, Canada

Author:Stanley Smith

From the original introduction: The Upper Devonian corals described in this monograph were, with very few exceptions, collected by the late Mr. E. J. Whittaker from that part of the Mackenzie Basin which lies between Fort Simpson and the Slave River. The several collections are from points on the Bouvier, Redknife, Trout, Jean Marie, and Lizard rivers, streams entering the Mackenzie from the south and from Lake Kakisa, and Hay River which empties into Great Slave Lake. The area represented has an east-west extension of about 200 miles and a north-south limit approximating 100 miles. Mr. Whittaker was working on the collection at the time of his death, but unfortunately his investigations had not proceeded very far. Nevertheless, he had recognized that many of the species were undescribed and had given names and written a preliminary description of some of the forms. He had not the opportunity of cutting many sections or of revising the Devonian coral genera, tasks which have occupied a very great deal of the writer’s time for several years. This monograph, it is hoped, will be a memorial to the indefatigable and careful industry of a collector who showed high promise of proving an observant and painstaking investigator.
