From the original catalog copy: In response to growing worldwide interest in understanding the environments favorable to coal deposition, the Coal Geology Division of the Society held a symposium on the subject at the Annual Meeting in 1964. This volume is the result. Four of its six papers describe typical modern environments favorable to accumulation of plant material: (1) the swamp-marsh complex of southern Florida, (2) the stratigraphy of the modern coastal mangrove swamp, (3) peat deposits of the Louisiana coastal plain, and (4) the development of muskeg (peatland) in the Far North. One of the other two papers presents broad interpretations of the deposition of the Pennsylvanian coals of the central and eastern United States. The final paper applies the techniques of coal petrography and paleobotany to interpretation of the environments of coal accumulation. Together, the papers in this symposium provide better insight into the genesis of coal seams than has hitherto been available in one volume.
