Full Title: Petrology and Structure of the Vourinos Ophiolitic Complex of Northern Greece
Author: Eldridge M. Moores
From the original catalog copy: Very large masses of ultramafic rock are associated with many mountain systems. Although many tectonic theories are based upon interpretations of their occurrences their actual mode of origin has long been a subject of controversy. In the Tethyan mountain system, ultramafic rocks occur commonly with coarse gabbro and diabase extrusive lava, and radiolarian chert. This association, the "ophiolitic suite" of Alpine geologists was emplaced in the Jurassic period and was only incidentally involved in later metamorphism and orogeny. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate by a detailed study of the Vourinos Mass the hypotheses of origin of the ophiolitic suite. Mapping of rock types, layering, fold axes, joints, and other field relations were coupled with extensive, but by no means complete, petrographic and mineralogic analysis. Rather than facilitate the study of a simply differentiated body, as anticipated, the general good exposure of the Vourinos Mass revealed a staggering degree of complexity, especially in its ultramafic parts. This report is an attempt to synthesize the relations as presently known. It is less a final statement than a testimony to the complexity of the rocks.
