Full Title: Symposium on Palynology of the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary
Editors: Robert M. Kosanke and Aureal T. Cross
From the original catalog copy: In 1966, a symposium on Late Cretaceous–Early Tertiary palynology was held in San Francisco. Eight papers were presented there, five of which are published in this volume, along with two others that were not presented at the symposium. The theme of the symposium, Late Cretaceous–Early Tertiary palynology, represents a narrow span of geologic time which is in part parallel to the Laramide orogeny. Although this time span is short compared to the geologic history of the Earth, a number of significant biological events are attributed to this interval. Palynology can be utilized to help solve some of the problems not resolved by other facets of paleontology in delineating the boundaries of the Cretaceous–Tertiary. The papers included in this volume record information on palynomorphs from the Mississippi Embayment westward, including Canada. One paper discusses fossil phytoplankton evolution on the basis of distribution in time and space together with similar information about modern representatives. Another demonstrates the usefulness of dinoflagellates and acritarchs for zonation and correlation of the Navarro Group of Texas.
