In the fall of 1966, W. C. Krumbein gave a lecture at the University of Pennsylvania. From the germ of an idea provoked during an after-lecture discussion, aided and abetted by the considerable energies and cooperation provided by many people and organizations since then, a sequence of events culminating in this publication has taken place. This Quantitative Geology Sequence was in reality a curriculum package that included an annotated bibliography, two short reviews, two short courses, and the symposium that led to this publication. Each element in the Sequence was planned to build upon previous ones and yet, given a sufficiently strong starting point, to be able to stand alone. This is based on a symposium held at the 82nd Annual Meeting of The Geological Society of America, Atlantic City, New Jersey, November 10, 1969.
