In 1892, Dell'Erba created a controversy by interpreting the piperno "lavas" in the Phlegrean Fields of Italy as tuffs which had been hot at the time of deposition. Since then, the historical development of concepts of ash-flow eruptions and deposits has been nicely summarized by Ross and Smith (1961). This GSA volume, dedicated to Robert L. Smith, presents 14 papers that provide a milestone in the study of ash-flow tuffs and a basis for ongoing research.
