Joseph Barrell first named the Catskill Delta more than 70 years ago, and rocks from there have attracted and educated hundreds of geologists since then. Enormous tonnages of sandstone, siltstone, and shale have been extracted for construction, and in the 1980s, thousands of oil and gas wells have been completed there. These 18 papers present new ideas involving plate tectonics, paleogeography, and depositional models and sedimentologic and paleobiologic concepts not emphasized until recent years. The first section of this volume is an overview of major features; the second is an examination of more specific aspects. Sedimentologists will find this a fascinating, coordinated attempt to unravel the complexities of an intriguing group of sediments in terms of paleoenvironments and continental tectonics.
