Full Title: Soils and Quaternary Geology of the Southwestern United States
Editor: David L. Weide
As expanding populations urbanize areas within zones of potential seismic activity, there is an increasing need for geologists to date recent sedimentary deposits and tectonic activity. This volume explores how pedology—the study of soils—can be a useful tool. Laboratory and field studies are presented that are aimed at dating soils and determining the rate of soil-forming processes. The first five papers explore the pedogenic process of carbonate and clay accumulation and their rates and depths of formation, and how soils may be used to date surficial deposits and recent movement on major faults. The last three papers are a series of regional studies focusing on Quaternary alluvial stratigraphy, soils, landscape ages, and recent tectonic history. Provides valuable information about areas of neotectonics and alluviation, especially in the Great Basin, and therefore to geomorphologists.
