Topaz, lining vugs and cavities in rhyolitic lavas from Colorado and Utah, was first reported in the nineteenth century. Investigations summarized in this volume show that topaz-bearing lavas are widespread in the western U.S. and that these lavas also contain unusually high concentrations of incompatible lithophile elements and fluorine.
The authors conclude that topaz rhyolites are surprisingly similar in their mode of emplacement, mineralogy, major- and trace-element chemistry, and tectonic setting.
