The recognition of mélanges and olistostromes of different types has a profound influence on paleogeographic and tectonostratigraphic reconstructions of orogenic belts. This is particularly true in the United States segment of the Appalachian orogen, where mélanges and olistostromes have been described and interpreted only relatively recently. This volume focuses on the U.S. Appalachians, with balanced geographic coverage from Maine to Alabama, in order to emphasize these new and exciting research endeavors. The eleven papers are important both for Appalachian regional geology and for mélange-olistostrome studies in general. Recognition and interpretation of mélanges and olistostromes in polydeformed metamorphic terranes at different metamorphic grades is a recurring theme.
