A wide variety of convulsive geologic events affect the sedimentologic record. This volume looks at extraordinarily energetic events of regional influence such as great storms, catastrophic floods (jökulhlaups), giant tsunamis, large mass failures, explosive volcanic eruptions, and the impact of large extraterrestrial bodies. Included are discussions of events that shaped Quaternary landforms and deposits as well as those manifested in the older stratigraphic record. Most events described had a potential for a catastrophic toll in a human sense. An understanding of their sedimentologic consequences can enhance the capability of scientists to asses the potential hazards in developed areas and to predict more accurately their human consequences.
