Until now, detailed studies of ultramafic rocks of the Appalachian Piedmont have been, for the most part, conspicuously absent from the literature. Although volumetrically insignificant, the ultramafic rocks may be the most important lithologic units in unravelling the tectonic history of the southern and central parts of the orogen. Ultramafic rocks of the Piedmont occur in a variety of settings and are likely to be of several different ages. Some are associated with differentiated diapiric intrusions, while the others are probably fragments of ophiolitic or oceanic lithosphere. The volume provides up-to-date descriptions and interpretations of ultramafic and associated rocks and examines diverse aspects of these rocks, focusing on variability in their nature, origin, and significance. The eight papers in this volume are important for Appalachian regional geology and for general studies of ultramafic rocks, mineral parageneses, geochemistry, effects of metamorphism on ultramafic compositions, emplacement and deformation, and tectonic implications.
