This is a broad-based survey of the influence of volcanism on the fossil record. Although volcanism and paleontology are often regarded as separate disciplines, there are numerous connections. This volume examines the relationships between volcanism and fossil plants and animals from Paleozoic through recent times. Topics covered include the influence of volcanism and mortality, preservation, paleobiogeography, and extinction. Papers deal with both classic sites such as Pompeii and new sites such as the carboniferous site in Scotland. Contributions include a blend of new data, synthesis, and reviews.
