The distinctive character of fossiliferous Cambrian rocks in proximity to the city of Boston suggested to early geologists possible stratigraphic equivalence with similar rocks along the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. Today, these rocks are considered part of an apparent allochthonous landmass (called the composite Avalon terrane) suggested to have become appended to the North American craton in the early to mid-Paleozoic. Thirteen chapters summarize stratigraphic and structural information; provide a current systematic treatment of stratigraphic and tectonic episodes in terranes of SE New England; focus on Vendian to early Paleozoic Boston basin succession; and deal with the growing use and importance of trace-element geochemistry of plutonic and volcanic rocks, including metamorphosed counterparts, to discriminate among terranes, characterize tectonic/structural regimes, and establish stratigraphy.
