The U.S. has a vast amount of coal resources (lignite to anthracite in rank, and Paleozoic to Tertiary in age). Effective utilization of this important energy resource depends on a proper understanding of coal quality. Coal geochemistry provides insights into characterization of coal and the geologic factors that control the properties and thus the quality. The first six papers provide state-of-the-art research on inorganic constituents in peat, and abundances and the modes of occurrence of sodium, arsenic, rare earth, and other trace elements in coal. The next three papers address practical issues concerning coal combustion and mining. It is demonstrated that ash fusion temperature is related to the geologic conditions of coal deposition. Determination of sodium and chlorine in coal lithotypes leads to a new perception about the forms of these elements in coal. The book ends with a geochemical study of acid mine drainage problems.
