Although the accreted-terrane concept was born in the Klamath Mountains, controversy still exists about the origin of those Paleozoic and lower Mesozoic volcanic rocks, their relation to similar rocks in the northern Sierra Nevada, and the paleogeographic affinity of these arc terranes to North America. Related questions exist concerning the paleogeographic relations of these arc-volcanic rocks to imbricated basinal terranes in Nevada and to fragmented oceanic and high-pressure metamorphic complexes within the Klamath-Sierran belt. Twenty-five papers in this volume present current data and interpretations on the origin and paleogeographic relations of basinal, arc, and subduction-related terranes that are critical to understanding Paleozoic and early Mesozoic tectonism in this part of the Cordillera.
