Eleven papers examine the stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, depositional environments, paleoecology, and sedimentary tectonics across terrestrial, nearshore, and marine deposits which formed along the southwestern margin of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. This data-oriented volume traces rocks from westernmost Utah eastward to the Kaiparowits basin, then south to the Black Mesa basin of northwestern Arizona, and then eastward into New Mexico. The contributions include paleoecologic interpretations and biostratigraphies based on vertebrates, palynomorphs, foraminfera, and molluscs. Discussions of sedimentary patterns in terrestrial, nearshore, and marine settings are included. The paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, and paleoecology of the Mancos shale are examined from several perspectives. Facies and depositional environments associated with coal deposits on Black Mesa and the regressive Gallup Sandstone are also discussed.
