The Shimanto Belt of southwest Japan, together with offshore extensions in the Nankai Trough, represents one of the most thoroughly studied accretionary complexes in the world. Ten papers in this volume address various aspects of the regional and local thermal history. The Muroto Peninsula of Shikoku Island served as the prime focus of field-based work. Authors derived their temporal and spatial reconstructions of the paleothermal structure from several types of data, including deformation fabrics, vitrinite reflectance, illite crystallinity, fission tracks, and near-surface heat flow.
