Analyzes the geomorphic evolution of the San Pedro River of southeast Arizona. Like many streams in the Southwest, the San Pedro River was changed substantially by arroyo cutting around 1900. The changes dramatically deepened and widened the channel, resulting in catastrophic disruption of aquatic, floral, and surface-water resources. This study evaluates the causes of the changes in the channel, determines the rate of channel widening, and identifies factors controlling the rate of widening. These data are used to infer how, and at what rate, the alluvial channel re-attained equilibrium after the arroyo cutting disturbance.
