The peat origin of coal has long been known, but specific processes of peat accumulation have not been clearly identified. This is primarily because peat accumulates in a wide variety of environments, not all of which produce coal formations of economic value. This volume addresses the origin of coal and coal-bearing strata and presents climate and doming in peat deposits as important factors. Data, observations, and interpretations from modern peat deposits in equatorial Indonesia and coal deposits of Pennsylvanian age from North American are presented. The concepts of climatic control and doming discussed in this volume are sure to contribute to better understanding of coal geology, as the cyclothem and deltaic concepts did in the past.
