Description: This 2-day trip will showcase several iconic geologic and cultural sites north of Loreto. On Day 1, we will drive north from Loreto to the calm coastal town of Heroica Mulegé. We will visit the Sierra de Guadalupe and visit a beautiful canyon that demonstrates the power of water when it rains in the peninsula. We will also visit Cueva de San Borjitas, an incredible cave with ancient rock art. We will spend the night in Heroica Mulegé. On Day 2, while driving south back towards Loreto, we will admire the fantastic Bahía Concepción area and take a leisurely hike in Arroyo Arce, passing by some interesting points related to the rift-related Pliocene-Quaternary Loreto Basin. The trip will return to Loreto in time for the Icebreaker event that is scheduled the evening before the conference begins.

Considerations: During the trip, participants will need to climb in and out of a van several times. Participants should expect a two-and-a-half-hour drive on paved roads and a one-and-a-half-hour drive on unpaved roads. Bathroom breaks will be available, as needed. Brief hikes on sometimes uneven surfaces are necessary to reach some sites. Participants might interact with plants and animals that have sharp spines (e.g., cacti, cholla, sea urchins). Participants should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions in April, including clouds, sun, light rain, wind, and temperatures ranging from cold to hot. A light jacket will be fantastic. Feel free to bring your walking sticks.
