Description: Step into the cultural and ecological heart of the Loreto Sierra foothills with a local rancher and a local, bilingual biologist. You will visit a desert oasis, hike to a small authentic rock-art site, and explore Sonoran Desert vegetation along the way. This field trip will drive through the newly decreed Nopolo National Park to Primer Agua Oasis and walk ~1 km up the arroyo to a working ranch for a traditional lunch before returning to vehicles. Learn about the cultural context of ranching in Baja California Sur and site stewardship as well as natural history (botany, ecology) and human history (rock art). The visit ends in a delicious traditional local meal with homemade (and homegrown) machaca, beans, cheese and tortillas. High-clearance vehicle transportation included.
Considerations: During the trip, participants will need to climb in and out of a van several times. Participants should expect short drives on paved and unpaved roads. Bathroom breaks will be available, as needed. Participants will need to hike ~1 km up a sandy arroyo to the ranch, and hike ~1 km in the arroyo back to the vans. Participants might interact with plants and animals with sharp spines (e.g., cactus, cholla, sea urchin). Participants should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions in April, including clouds, sun, light rain, wind, cold to hot temperatures, etc.
