Much of the work reported in this book is based on detailed studies of deep-sea cores taken by R/V Vema on its twentieth cruise and by R/V Conrad on its tenth cruise. In addition to the geomagnetic data they yielded, many of these cores were rich in diatoms, Radiolaria, and ice-rafted debris, as well as numerous discrete ash layers.
The volume is comprehensive in scope, including papers dealing with stratigraphy, the nature and distribution of bottom sediments, bottom water and near-bottom suspended sediment, paleomagnetic and paleoclimatic interpretations, and new geomagnetic data from across the entire North Pacific.
The closing paper presents a model for the geological evolution of the Pacific floor through the Tertiary.
