This volume is inspired by the life and works of Dr. William A. (Bill) Thomas, who developed
the stratigraphic and structural framework for the Appalachians and championed the idea of tectonic inheritance along the Laurentian margin.
Presenting an overview of modern work to understand the Appalachian Mountains, the volume includes contributions from many of Thomas’s former students and colleagues. Chapters cover studies of the Appalachian and adjacent intracratonic basins, structural development of the Appalachian fold and thrust belt, and history of the crystalline basement through applied geochronology and field investigations. Focus areas include the central Appalachians of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia, as well as the late Paleozoic intracratonic basins of Laurentia, and, in particular, the southern Appalachians of Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.
