Full title: Pioneering Advances in Volcanic Hazard Mitigation between World Wars I and II: The Life, Travel Letters, and Legacy of Dr. Charles Edgar Stehn (1884–1945), “Volcano Doctor” of the Netherlands Indies

Authors: Charlotte Stehn, Barry Voight, and  J.T. van Gorsel

Dr. Ch. Edgar Stehn travelled to the Netherlands Indies (now Indonesia) in 1921 to work as a geologist in the Ministry of Mines. While there, he developed a great interest in volcanology. Through his travel letters, readers join him on expeditions to Java and Sulawesi in that first year, where his focus turned to Krakatau, Merapi, Semeru, Tengger Caldera, Lamongan, Locon-Empung, and Awu. This volume also covers Stehn’s career before his departure and later as the “Volcano Doctor of the Dutch Indies” in the period between the two World Wars. In the book, readers meet other volcanologists who were important for the final development of volcanological research in the Netherlands Indies.

The wealth of documents and photographs, combined with Stehn’s engaging storytelling, will captivate both experts and lay readers.
