Romanian geologists have contributed greatly to developing concepts and a deep understanding of a part of the Alpine orogenic belt; however, little of this has reached or been appreciated by American geologists. Only a few detailed summaries of Romanian geology have been written, and the most recent — by Oncescu (1957) — was published only in Romanian and Russian. Stille (1953) published an extraordinary work on the entire Carpathians, but it is now out of date. Much of the current literature is in Romanian journals that are not readily available, and the language barrier further complicates its usefulness. Because of renewed interest in regional tectonic analysis and from concepts arising from geological and geophysical work in ocean basins, it is necessary to understand large parts of orogenic belts in order to attempt to unravel their geologic development. Romanian geologists have reached a rather deep understanding of the Carpathians, and their conclusions are important in adding to the overall knowledge of the Alpine orogenic belt. This paper focuses attention on the contributions of Romanians to geology and presents an outline of Romanian alpine geology not readily available to the American geologist. In addition, geologists already acquainted with the Western Alps will be able to extend their knowledge to a more easterly part of the orogenic belt that contrasts significantly with the western alpine model.
