Most of these papers, presented at the Tenth International Basement Tectonics Conference, deal with a wide variety of aspects of the 1.1 Ga Midcontinent Rift System of North America, including tectonics, strain analysis, sedimentology, geophysics, and economic geology, and how they interrelate.
The remaining contributions concern other rift-related structures and rock units in the North American midcontinent that date from the time of rifting into the Cambrian. Many of the significant features described in this book are buried under Paleozoic and Quaternary strata and are known chiefly from geophysical surveys and scattered drilling.
These papers provide new insights and interpretations for the foundations of the U.S. continental midsection.
